Music-Making and Creative Movement

Here's one of many activities we have in a MoveMe! programme, using the song "Three Blind Mice". Nursery rhymes provide a sense of familiarity and puts novice learners at ease. Their simple structure make them easy to pick up even if one has not heard the song before. This structure is built upon and used in varied ways to promote music-making and creative movement.

The activity can first be introduced by singing the melody (without words) while pointing to the visual symbols. This allows the tempo to be varied as needed. It also helps some participants (e.g. on the autism spectrum) stay focused and anticipate what's coming. While the above movements have been designed with certain movement patterns in mind, there are many possibilities, including use of props. Participants can also be invited to contribute ideas in a social group setting. Let's get creative!
