Music & Creative Movement

Here are some examples on how a simple song can be used for music-making and creative movement. Use these as ideas for your own creative activities, or simply play the (movement) videos to follow along!

Visualising Music

Musical structure and patterns can be made "visible" and meaningful to non-music readers. This can then form the foundation for further creative activities.

Simple Ensemble Playing

Groups of players can be assigned parts, thereby learning musical skills such as rhythm, timing and tracking a "score". They also practise social skills such as turn-taking and cooperative playing.

Creative Movement

The movements in this video are intentionally designed to move the upper/lower body and left/right sides separately, while also including core-distal and contra-lateral movements. There are many other possibilities!

Fine-Motor Movement

Bringing attention to the smaller muscles, this set of movements also includes eye-tracking - looking at hands/fingers while moving them. Moving both hands to one side of the body involves crossing the midline.
